Well lookie here another week of Ironman training gone by … poof. Just like that.
Seems to happen every 7 days or so. Crazy.
Week 17 of triathlon training still not normal
This was another weird week. My oldest is out of school so her schedule is wonky and my youngest had short days. Oh and we were having daily torrential rains here in the tropics.
But here’s the breakdown day by day just to be totally honest about it.
Ironman Training week 17
Monday I did some strength work and couldn’t swim because the pool was closed for a broken pipe. For real. Apparently it was half empty. That must have been a shocker when they went to open the pool. It’s amazed they got it fixed in just one day.
Tuesday I did my bike workout and that’s it. I meant to run but didn’t I don’t remember why – maybe rain. Nope wait I remember … carpool brunch with my daughter. Can’t show up stinky to carpool brunch … well I could but instead I showered and wore non-exercise clothes.
Wednesday I did my Tuesday run … I started on the treadmill because it was supposed to be thunderstorming but I thought I might die of boredom and in fact it wasn’t storming so I ran out my run in the rain outside. There was no thunder. Treadmill running is very challenging for me. My treadmill gives me a pace in levels like 1.0, 1.5 and so on. I don’t know what the pace actually is. At one point I thought I was jogging and then I realized I could walk at that speed. It’s so confusing. Also, I have learned to be careful because although I try to be careful I change my form on the treadmill and I can get super sore afterwards.
Also I swam just a bit on Wednesday. About 40 minutes. It was raining the whole time but I did it because I literally have not been swimming. At all. I am super agitated about this. I really want to post some big swimming volume very soon or else I may honestly freak all the way out. That whole family first thing can sometimes make triathlon training hard but I had a meeting at school so it was a shortened swim.
Thursday – bike and run almost like I know what a triathlon is or something.
The weekend Ironman training started one day early
Friday – Long run 16 frigging miles of solo running. My route was 8 mile loops stopping at the house to refill my water and pee in between. It was incredibly humid and I chaffed everywhere even with tons of glide. Bleh. That was one painful shower. Followed by a kids birthday party (my kid) and a sleepover that was supposed to be 4 boys that grew to 7 boys and then shrank to 6 boys at 2:30 AM. For breakfast they ate half a watermelon 20 pancakes and 2 pounds of bacon.
Saturday – recovering from the sleepover. I did finally get a bike fitting for the new bike which was 3 hours of light pedaling that should count for what an actual 5-10 minute workout, right? The fitter said something sort of shocking which was that he thinks I should be on a bigger frame. It’s shocking because when I stand in my shoes I barely (like one centimeter) clear the top tube.
Sunday 100 miles biking followed by a 1 mile run. All 100 mile bike rides are epic. This one featured 100% humidity and heat at the start, torrential rain for about 30 minutes, searing heat and of course neverending headwinds on the way home that were strong enough that I pulled out my phone and checked the weather app (8-12 mph officially … felt like a lot).
And that’s it. What should have been a 17 hour week was only 14 and had practically no swimming. EEEEEK. Here’s hoping this week is a little more solid or else my nerves may seriously fray.
I’m working on another article about Ironman anxiety dreams…which are pretty normal – stay tuned for that.
