In brief you can run pretty much everywhere in Miami. Usually our weather is such that you can do what you want outside most days of the year. So this post is more about where you can find common running routes with group runs. I’m also mentioning the training groups that I know about for the Miami Marathon and Miami Half Marathon which happens in January every year.
note: if you want to run with me, yes me, I’m putting together a training group for the Miami half marathon and a1a full marathon in 2017. Reach out by commenting or emailing me and I’ll tell you the details.
There is a continuous path from Old Culter Road to the end of Key Biscayne. This is a very popular running route in Miami and you can start anywhere you want along it. Many people start at Cocoplum Circle because Team Footworks provides cold water cooler there on Saturday mornings all year long. Others start at points where there is parking in Coconut Grove (Kennedy Park, Sailing Club) or Alice Wainright Park in Coconut Grove still others will drive over the bridge (paying the toll) and park at one of the roadside beaches for the start of their run. Then you can take a quick swim after your run. We triathletes call the first beach after William Powell Bridge TriBeach.
You can also run on Miami Beach. There is a boardwalk for a chunk of the run and there are sidewalks basically from Miami Beach to forever. We do this every once in a while to shake up our running location.
This is the group I trained with when I started training for Marathons in my 20’s. I still think it’s the best group for training for a marathon or half marathon. You get a tested and supported training system. A safe place to park and start and stop. Leaders for all paces from Boston Qualifying to Walking. Plus 2 supported run runs during the week. Many have copied but nobody can compare to this running program in my opinion.
iRun is a running store further north than me. I see wonderful things about their training programs but I cannot speak from experience because I’ve never taken part. They do have structured workouts and I think if you can take part in them you will get faster. They also get points because they do provide pacers for local runs and even put on a few runs a year. It’s a good group and a good store.
This is probably the biggest running group that trains for the Miami Marathon on my route. It is the least expensive of the groups that I know about and I’d really say it’s almost just a training plan with a coordinated starting point for long runs. I know people who love it and people who don’t. I haven’t tried it so I can only tell you how to get the information. They do long runs from Coconut Grove on Saturdays. I think they also do weekday runs from Sole Runners in Kendall which is also a good store.
This is a new store. My information is sparse. They may have purchased Sole Runners. I think they have a few locations including Brickell.
There are probably lots more training groups. But these are the big ones that I know about. Shoot me a message if I’ve left any groups off that should be here.
